MALE SEXUAL MYTHS: MYTHS ABOUT SEMEN - ABSTINENCE FROM SEXUAL INDULGENCE
Saints, sadhus and politicians have been advocating for centuries that for spiritual uplift man must refrain from earthly pleasure like sex, which saps his vitality and weakens his soul. Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of our Nation, and Shri Morarji Desai, the former Prime Minister, have preached abstinence and practised it themselves for the greater part of their lives.
Is refraining from sex healthy or does it harm the body due to suppression of the powerful sexual instinct? Dr. Wilhelm Stekel, one of the greatest psychotherapists, states in Impotence in the Male, 'Impotent men are the main support of various abstinence movements which are so plentiful, whereas the really great man, even in respect to his sexuality, can only think and feel with greatness.'
Albert Ellis in his book Sex and Liberated Man believes that 'voluntary abstinence remains an unnecessary evil. Accept that misery and you seem off your rocker. You'd better see a psychologist, fast, than keep affecting yourself with that kind of nonsense.
In my experience, many of my patients and friends have temporarily refrained from sexual activity for varying reasons, such as a form of spiritual discipline or an involvement in prolonged activity such as preparing for examinations. Healthy human beings are adaptable to their environment and many found the experience helpful. They could understand themselves better and there were no detrimental effects on their health. Some found initial difficulty when starting sexual activity again but after some time they started functioning normally.
